Fall is finally here, and with it comes all of our favorite autumnal flavors like pumpkin pie, comforting soups, and — tacos? Yes! National Taco Day is Oct. 4, and we think it’s worth observing as an official holiday. After all, why wait for Cinco de Mayo to roll around to celebrate the simple, feel-good flavor of a tasty taco or two (or a delicious plateful!)? Just read on as we share a few fun ways to mark the big day.
Learn About Taco History
It’s hard to imagine a world without tacos — but as it turns out, this delicious dish has likely only been around since the 18th century, according to Smithsonian Magazine. It was at this time in Mexico that silver miners used “tacos,” or pieces of paper folded over gunpowder, to carve out stone. Apparently, the miners’ food of choice reminded them of the explosive device’s shape, and it stuck!
Get Crafty
Families with young kiddos can expand on the taco fun with foodie crafts! A paper plate folded in half makes for a great taco shell — simply color it in with crayons or pencils, then add colorful tissue paper and food cut-outs to represent your family’s favorite fillings. You can also use colorful felt and Velcro to create your own taco toys that can be assembled and reassembled for endless Taco Tuesdays to come.
Pair Peach Valley Tacos With The Sea Breeze
The simple formula for a taco — mix protein, veggies, and cheese in a hard or soft shell — lends itself to endless combinations! Here at Peach Valley, ours features blackened fresh catch of the day, Southwest coleslaw, pico de gallo, chipotle mayo, and black bean corn salsa served up between two soft taco shells. The beachy, refreshing flavor pairs perfectly with Port Orange’s ocean breeze! Dig in with a picnic at your favorite park or your own backyard.
Try A Sweet Twist
Back at home, why not finish National Taco Day with a sweet finale? Dessert tacos provide a fun, whimsical way to turn the tables on the taco formula. The options are truly unlimited, but one fun route is to fry up your own cinnamon-sugar flour tortillas, then fill with vanilla ice cream, berries, chocolate chips and any other mix-ins you may crave!
